Though there’s many lifestyle choices that effect our energy levels, food is one of the most important contributors. It’s our fuel, like petrol is to a car. And junk food to us is like getting ripped off at a petrol station when they dilute pure gasoline with additives such as water or ethanol. There might be a little bit of petrol, or nutrients, but the rest of it is just going to damage your engine and make it run for a lot shorter of a time than straight petrol.
We like to feed our bodies with nutrients in their purest forms, which means eliminating processed food and refined sugars. A typical plate of food for us includes a leafy green to keep our iron levels up, a portion of protein (meat, beans, tofu, tempe, eggs), a small portion of a carbohydrate for energy (five grain bread, rice noodles or whole wheat pasta, brown rice), and some tasty vegetables, roots and spices for flavor and extra minerals, such as onion, garlic, turmeric, red peppers, sprouts, ginger, etc. Our snacks are usually beverages, alternating days between fresh fruit juices (with no added sugar) and coconuts, or roasted nuts. And okay, we’ll admit we like to indulge a bit in chocolate after dinner.
Being in tune with our diets and energy levels helps us maintain our active lifestyle, last in the surf and feel good on a daily basis.
