A quiet yoga retreat tucked away in what once was the small fishing village of Montezuma, you’ll be immersed in the abundant nature and wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer while being able to experience a vibrant, young and creative town nearby. The bungalows at Hotel Los Mangos are situated beneath mango trees and right in front of the ocean, with the architecture reflecting the style of Bali. Their minimalist and natural approach encourages complete serenity during your retreat.
The owner of Montezuma Yoga, an expat of 17 years and long-time yogi, has created an inspiring environment in her dream location, where highly skilled instructors will lead you through classes of Vinyasa and Yin yoga. Classes are open to the public on a daily basis, which means you’ll have the opportunity to practice more than what’s inclusive in the retreat package and connect with fellow travelers or locals alike.
Enjoy the warm waters and pristine beaches during the days with surf lessons when your instructor picks you up right from your accommodation. They’ll decide on the best spots to go to that day, and you’ll surf out front or take beautiful hikes through the jungle to other nearby beaches. If you’re not up for surfing or still have the energy after a surf, there’s stunning waterfalls or tide pools to explore, or the local town where you’ll find International restaurants as well as local flavors.

Nestled in a small village, you won’t need any mode of transportation here other than your own two feet to explore the boho town and pristine beaches. From Los Mangos, you’re a five minute walk to the town center and only ten minutes from the famously beautiful waterfalls, rivers, and unspoiled beaches. Howler or White-face Monkey sightings are common, along with Green Iguanas, one of Costa Rica’s most impressive species.
Read what Lonely Planet has to say about the area:
“Montezuma is an endearing beach town that demands you abandon the car to stroll, swim and (if you can stroll a little further) surf. The warm and wild ocean and that remnant, ever-audible jungle have helped this rocky nook cultivate an inviting, boho vibe. Typical tourist offerings such as canopy tours do a brisk trade here, but you’ll also bump up against Montezuma’s internationally inflected, artsy-rootsy beach culture in yoga classes, volunteer corps, veggie-friendly dining rooms and neo-Rastas hawking handcrafted jewelry and uplifting herbs. No wonder locals lovingly call this town ‘Montefuma.’”

Surfing in Costa Rica has become wildly popular as the country offers world-class waves, mostly on the Pacific Ocean side. Swells are long-period which provide easy paddle-outs, and there are a mix of beach breaks, point breaks and a few scattered rocky / reef breaks.
The surfing around Montezuma is very “user-friendly” with easy take-offs, ideal for learning. If you’re a more experienced beginner or an intermediate surfer, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are also located on the Nicoya Peninsula and are about 30 minutes away. There you’ll find even more variety with the opportunity to surf more challenging waves.
All of our teachers are very skilled and experienced. We welcome all levels and customize our classes to the guests needs. You can also book private sessions as well as massages to compliment your retreat.
